It's Pimm's Time...

21/06/2008: Beginners’ Welcome Day.

The 2008 Beginners’ Welcome Day saw a large turnout from both old and new members with 28 players on the lawns.  This despite poor weather and the inconvenient parking resulting from the Gala being on the same day.  Everyone enjoyed themselves, especially after partaking of the Pimm’s provided for the occasion.

14/06/2008: Lauriston Ells

The 2008 Lauriston Ells competition was held in glorious weather, in sharp contrast to last year.  In fact this year’s Beginners’ Coaching Course has been blessed with good weather all the way through, with sunshine every weekend.

There were ten entrants, with the competition played over two rounds, each match being limited to 50 minutes.  Play was extremely competitive, with most matches won by a single point, and two going to sudden-death after time.

The eventual winners were Muriel Sim and Sarah Duguid, following in her father’s footsteps.  Congratulations to them both and to everyone else for making it such a close competition and for playing to such a high standard after just a few weeks!

9/5/2008: Edinburgh Tournament wins Activcity Support

The 2008 Edinburgh Tournament will be supported by Activcity 2008/09, The City of Edinburgh Council's new Sport and Physical Activity Events Calendar.  Activcity aims to make Edinburgh the most physically active city in Europe by 2020.

Welcoming the news, Club Captain John Clark said, "Quite apart from the funding this brings, the promotion of the tournament, alongside events such as The Great Edinburgh Run, the first ever Scotland v England one-day cricket match and the Scotland v New Zealand rugby international will help to really raise the Tournament's profile".

The 2008 Edinburgh Tournament takes place at Fettes College 11th-16th August.  For further deatils and an entry form please see the Edinburgh Tournament page.

30/4/2008: Competition Draws Published

The draws for this year's competitions have now been made and can be seen on our Competitions page.  Please arrange to play your first round matches as soon as possible.

24/1/2008: Skittles Evening

18 people turned out at the Sheep Heid in Duddingston for the Skittles Evening.  With seven from the Meadows Club, 9 from Edinburgh and two who were members of both, it was decided to play an Edinburgh v Meadows challenge.  With each club fielding one team of five and another of four the action was soon in full swing.

In each of the first two rounds the clubs managed a win apiece, so going into the final round the tension was high.  It had been agreed that if the match scores were still level at the end of the third round then the competition would be decided by the net score in the individual games, which favoured the Meadows.  Edinburgh however responded magnificently, winning both final games to snatch victory by 4 games to 2.

A great time was had by all, and it is anticipated that we shall do this again next year, so if you missed out this time you’ll get your chance!

4/12/2007: Lauriston Castle Tour and Cheese & Wine

This proved immensely popular, with 38 people turning out to enjoy the private tour and cheese & wine.  Two guides took the party round in separate groups and the questions flowed as freely as the wine.  Our thanks to the anonymous donor of the latter.

22/9/2007 – Five in a row for Sheila Tibbels

For the fifth year running Sheila Tibbels’s name will appear on the Lamont and Elliott trophies after she and partner John Clark overcame Allan Hawke and Fergus McInnes to win the Handicap Doubles competition.  It is the fourth time in the last five years that the pair have won, the only exception being last year when they broke up the three-times winning partnership to each partner new entrants.  That didn’t stop Sheila though, as she and new partner Jamie Edgar stormed to victory.  However, with last year’s partners unavailable the old Clark-Tibbels partnership was renewed with the seemingly inevitable result.  For the full picture of how they did it please see the Competitions and Tournaments page.

13/9/2007 - Edinburgh Overcomes Auchincruive

The Edinburgh team of Allan Hawke and Fergus McInnes scored another victory in the SCA Inter-Club League with a win in their final match against Auchincruive.  Edinburgh now sit atop the table with three wins and a draw from their four matches and must await results elsewhere to see whether or not they are crowned Inter-Club Champions for the first time since 2001.

13/9/2007 - Alan Wilson defends Open title.

Alan Wilson successfully defended his Open title, beating Campbell Morrison +9 in the final.  For full details of how the competition unfolded over the season, see the Competitions & Tournaments page.

9/9/2007 – Sheila Tibbels wins John Blaikie Cup

The 2007 Short Croquet Tournament was won by Sheila Tibbels.  She is seen being presented with the trophy by Marjorie Elliott who was the first ever winner of the trophy in 1995.  For a full report please see the Competitions & Tournaments page.

4/9/2007 – Ian Wright defends Golf Croquet title

This year’s Golf Croquet final, held over from Fettes due to illness, was won by Ian Wright, the defending champion.

3/9/7 - Alex Coull wins the Veteran's
Alex Coull has become the season's first knock-out winner with victory in the Veteran's Singles Championship.  His win this week over Ian Wright in the Process, together with his earlier victory over defending champion Ruth Goudie in the Draw means that there is no need of a final.  To see the full results go the Competitions and Tournaments page.

2/9/7 - Edinburgh wins Golf Croquet Challenge
Edinburgh won the annual golf croquet challenge match against Meadows today by 9 games to 8.  We had to borrow two players to make up our team and it was fitting that one of them, Chris, a visitor from Australia, scored the winning golden hoop that gave Edinburgh the trophy.

22/8/7 - Morven Wardley defends Midweek title (again)

Finally this year we had some good weather and there were entries from both the Meadows club and Hill of Tarvit.  Having last year become the first person to successfully defend the title, Morven Wardley did it again, winning for the third straight year.  For more details see the Competitions and Tournaments page.

20/8/7 - Edinburgh beat Glasgow

The Edinburgh team of Fergus McInnes and Allan Hawke defeated Glasgow's Tony Whateley and Joe Lennon, +15 and +18, in their match at Lauriston to maintain Edinburgh's place at the top of the Interclub League table.

Fettes 2007: Sunshine and Showers

17/8/7 - Edinburgh Tournament
The annual six-day tournament ran at Fettes College from Sunday 12 to Friday 17 August.  Four members of the Edinburgh Club won trophies: John Clark won Event 3 (advanced with bisques, handicaps 8 and over), Bob Cross won Event 4 (handicaps 14 and over), Fergus McInnes won both Event 2 (advanced, handicaps 4 and over) and Event 6X (unrestricted handicap), and Allan Hawke received the Lauder Bowl as the player getting furthest without winning any of the events.  See the Edinburgh Tournament page for more details.

5/8/7 - Stuart McKendrick Trophy

Once again the inclement weather that has characterised this summer restricted the entry.   16 stout-hearted souls braved the weather and in a tight finish the winner was Janice Duguid.   For full details see the report on the Competitions and Tournaments page.
